The Flats

For the construction of our set we need to make the walls of the set first and then build around them. The problem being with that is that we obviously can't make real walls as our set has to be portable as if it was a real set in use. Which means we need to make walls that are light, durable and can be easily attached and separated at will. To do this we need to make a fake wall out of wood or as they are known more commonly a 'flat'. These flats are simple constructions of of timber and plywood however depending on the necessary size, shape and strength of the flat this could change immensely, however for our small interior set, timber and plywood are perfectly suitable.

To create a flat we made a timber frame and drilled pilot holes at each intersecting joint and then screwed them together all the time using a right angle to ensure that the frame was straight. We then glued on the top of one side of the frame and then laid a large sheet of plywood on top of it. We need used a pressurised nail-gun to tack the plywood to the timber with the glue as added reinforcement.

We shall need a lot of these flats and of different heights and shapes as well.
